Capoeira Angola an Afro-Brasilian Art

Origins of Capoeira Angola:  The roots of "Capoeira " are in Angola, West Africa Its presence in Brasil dates back to the 1500's with the African Slave trade. This new art form of Capoeira came with them as part of their indigenous culture. Capoeira was originally an Angola, "Zebra dance", used to train young men that exhibited great strength and endurance. As a "Rights of passage", the young men who past these tests were then groomed for position of authority within their tribe or clan. The dance pantomimed the fighting movements of animals namely the Zebra. Capoeira got its name from Brasilians meaning "to mimic or dance like a chicken or rooster". As an effort to preserve this art form, the African slaves camouflaged the martial art by practicing it with drums and singing as if it were a dance, as it is still practiced today. As a result the men doing it could perform the secret art openly about their slave quarters with their masters looking on somewhat amused at a "dance" in which two opponents would seemingly do acrobatics and kick at each other with their feet.

Principals:
The first principal of Capoeira is to avoid aggression and conflict. Capoeira is a passive martial art and teaches one to control ones emotions at all times. It is taught in playful /partnership form and avoid contact key to learning Capoeira is balance between mind and body. To prepare for these physical demands, students must learn basic flexibility and turning exercises stretching movements and maneuvers, "the Ginga" moving stance, basic kicks, self awareness and proper breathing techniques. The Capoeira require the athlete to have complete control of his body and mind to obtain complete self-control. These exercises form the foundation of the art. From these basic movements the students begins to learn more advanced techniques like backbends, cartwheels, and handstands. Students will also learn the traditional songs and be introduced to the various instruments that accompany the martial art of Capoeira.
